Pacific Dream Home

A custom home designed for a working professional couple with a passion for photography and an active home-based business.  The two-story great room lets valuable daylight in from all four sides.  Special program requirements included a primary suite with library and laundry room; his- and hers separate offices; a packing and shipping room; twin guest suites; spaces for photo storage, printing, and mounting; a darkroom, and a gym. Heavy timber and log posts pay homage to the local vernacular. Tall patio doors take in the ocean view while the outdoor kitchen is shielded from rain and wind.

Whole House Remodel / Pop-top (After)

A whole house remodel including an entire second floor addition for this older Boulder home. Special challenges included satisfying Boulder's shadow ordinance while creating a functional design. Three new bedrooms and two baths were added on top of this 1940s one-story home. Main level walls were opened up to expand the living room space. The kitchen and breakfast nook were completely remodeled.

Niwot Design-Build

Another custom designed and built by the Architect to take in its spectacular panoramic view. The home's eclectic exterior evokes the prairie style while not being too intrusive on the neighborhood's character. The two-story great room lets in lots of daylight and allows additional views from the primary bedroom above.  Custom shutters close off the overlook for privacy. Built-in bookcases surround the custom sofa. The open floor plan handles large gatherings while the inconspicuous kitchen serves as a wet bar.  Tall patio doors in the breakfast area great room, and guest bedroom open onto to a spacious wrap-around deck. The primary bedroom overlooks the great room and has its own balcony. The laundry room off the garage serves as mudroom while opening to the fenced dog run.

Evergreen Whole House Remodel after

The client's existing 1950's raised ranch was poorly designed in many ways. It's main entry was on the far side of the house, accessible by narrow wooden stairs and never used. Instead, a flight of narrow wooden stairs on the rear of the existing house were used to enter the breakfast nook. The kitchen was dark, terribly dated, and closed off from the rest of the house. The existing 'front door' and foyer cut into the narrow family room with its low patio doors that provided a minimal view of the mountains beyond. The three main level bedrooms were tiny, accessed off a three-foot wide corridor, and shared one bathroom.

To solve all these problems, the roof was removed over the existing kitchen, breakfast nook and family room, replaced with a vaulted system of timber trusses. Motorized clerestory windows were added providing sorely needed daylight and natural ventilation. The former entry and foyer are gone. The new kitchen and breakfast space now connects to an enlarged family room on one side and a new main entry foyer on the opposite. Sixteen feet of patio doors now open to a new covered deck and take in the wonderful view.    

The existing bedroom wing now has a widened hallway and new staircase to the lower level, a powder room, and an expanded primary suite. The existing basement level garage and rec room have been totally remodelled with two new bedrooms, a music room, and two bathrooms.  
 
A new covered porch with an elegant stone staircase now serve as the primary entry. A new two-story wing has been added with a lower level 3-car garage and a main level craft space. New cedar siding and a red metal roof have been used throughout to to match the existing horse riding arena nearby while giving the house a completely new look.

The Architect designed and built this home for his growing family. The careful play of solid and void combine to create the sculptured residence he intended. Cement stucco cladding, prefinished steel sloped roofs, and aluminum framed windows all serve to keep maintenance at a minimum.

Upstairs, a primary suite with reading nook, fireplace, and balcony to take in the mountain view, and three children's bedrooms each with private bathroom. The main level features a two-story foyer with powder room, and great room separated by a second-floor bridge, a formal dining room with wet bar, a four-sided kitchen with twin ovens, refrigerator- freezers, a massive pantry, and bar seating, a breakfast room with french door to the patio, a family room with fireplace and french doors to the patio. a library with built-ins, a guest / au pair bedroom with private bath with patio access. A laundry-mud room connects to the four-car garage while a backstair provides direct access to the bedrooms upstairs. The basement contains a home theatre, billiard room and wet bar.

Colorado Prairie Custom Home

Designed and built by the Architect for an empty nester couple who desired a country style retirement home. The main floor contains the primary suite, large great room open to dining and kitchen spaces, a laundry - mudroom, and a three-car garage. Two guest bedrooms and bath are upstairs. A full unfinished basement is downstairs. Special attention was paid to the owner's antique baker's closet and beer tap in the kitchen. A dog-washing facility for the Scottish Wolf Hounds connects to a fenced run off the garage.
